Addictions Preventions/Traditional Coordinator
The Addictions/Prevention Counsellor is responsible for planning alternative programs that focus on the reduction and prevention of substance abuse. The main purpose of the Addictions/Prevention Counsellor is to provide assessment, counselling, support, and referrals for the Beausoleil First Nation community in regards to treating and preventing substance abuse. This is accomplished by focusing on activities, events, workshops, seminars, one-one counselling, and group counselling (such as sharing circles).
The Traditional aspect of the program aims at providing appropriate cultural programming and activities for community members. These activities can range from coordinating traditional ceremonies involving the sweat lodge to arranging medicine walks with an Elder. The program also aims at providing culturally appropriate education for those community members that do have not been regularly exposed to Aboriginal culture and/or traditional ways of life.
The main roles of the Addictions/Prevention and Traditional Program are:
- Promoting positive lifestyle choices and prevention of alcohol and substance abuse/addictions by utilizing various program initiatives.
- Providing alternative activities in the community.
- Providing assessment, counselling, support and referral services that respects the individual’s choices.
- Arranging for Traditional Service Provider’s to visit our community (i.e. Healers, Elders, traditional counsellors).
